Vision – Your Multi-Faceted Life Tool

What comes to mind when you hear the word “vision”? Is it a word salad on an employer’s wall or perhaps in a handbook that you never really paid attention to? The truth is vision can be an incredible tool in your life, not only personal but professional, and I’d love to cover both sides of it.

You see, vision is a compass for us, and that compass can help us make really good decisions. When we understand the vision and we have it written down, we can begin to hone in on what is the most important and what needs to be accomplished.

If you’re going to write a vision, and I would encourage you to do so, just keep it to one sentence or a few words. Whether it’s personal or professional, keep that vision in focus, so that you can begin to make decisions about how to align with that vision.

Should I be involved in this expenditure or not? Should I be spending time with this or not? Should I be in this club or this meeting or not? We begin to make a lot better decisions when we understand the vision or the endpoint to where we need to go.

When you think about your vision, begin to weave it through the fabric of your life or your business. In other words, start to put it into every part of what you’re doing. If it’s a business, then you may want to incorporate it in policies, incentives, and initiatives.

I can’t tell you how many companies I’ve worked with where this has really worked in a very short amount of time. When they begin to focus it into play every single day and the decisions they make in their performance, it’s a game changer. Not only that, but everybody’s on the same page moving forward.

Finally, create buy-in on the vision. Whether it’s your family you’re trying to get to buy in, your significant other or your company/team, get them involved in how to execute that vision best. A lot of times we only see the big picture as leaders, but when we allow the people on the front lines to start to come up with the ideas and we collaborate and give them opportunities to give us feedback, that’s when we start to learn ways in which we can execute that vision so much faster and more effective. Not only that, but we’re going to gain loyalty and buy-in with our teams.
